Steaming, grilling & baking: Alternative Ways to Cook

Here are some healthy alternative ways to cook. Check out each video for “how-to” steps:



The healthiest cooking technique around is streaming.  It’s also very quick and easy. The short cooking time helps preserve nutrients as well.

How to steam:



This technique add calorie-free flavor to meats, vegetables and even fruits. The high heat produces a crisp crust.

How to grill:

Baking decreases the cholesterol and simple carbohydrates in foods. Baking meat is also called roasting.

How to Bake/Roast:

Replace fats with oil:

Butter, margarine or shortening can easily be replaced with heart-healthy oils such as canola oil or olive oil. You can also substitute butter with pureed fruit or vegetables in recipes. For every tablespoon of butter you can replace it with heart-healthy oil.

An example of a heart-healthy oil: Olive oil is high in monounsaturated fats. These fats lower the risk of heart disease. They reduce levels of cholesterol.  Olive oil can also raise the levels of HDL, or good, cholesterol in the blood.
