As the temperature plummets this winter, so too does the will and motivation to exercise outside in the cold. It is important to keep your little ones moving this season, especially if it’s dangerously cold outside! Luckily, there are plenty of exciting and exhausting activities to do in your very own living room that can be fun for the entire family.
One idea is to build an indoor obstacle course. Incorporate tasks like crab walking, jumping jacks, jump rope, hop scotch, and more to get their hearts pumping. Encouraging them to beat their time can ensure an adequate amount of physical activity. This is a wonderful opportunity to improve their gross motor skills.
Another idea to work in some weight bearing exercise is “Popcorn Push-Ups.” This activity works exactly how it sounds. Encourage your kids to do push-ups correctly by placing a single piece of popcorn (preferably unsalted and un-buttered, for maximum health benefits) on the ground, and then challenging them to pick it up with their mouth. This exercise can help with balance, coordination, and strength.
One final idea is to throw a giant dance party, full of all of the family’s favorite songs. Freeze dance is a fun way to improve balance and coordination, as well. This one is sure to put a smile on everyone’s faces!
